Ohio at the Crosslands: Will it Retain or Eliminate Property Taxes, or Implement a Land Value Tax Instead?

by | Feb 28, 2026 | Groundswell | 1 comment

Grassroots activists are proposing to eliminate the hated property taxes in Ohio, apparently having learned nothing from the catastrophic property tax cap from California’s prop 13 tax revolt in the late 1970s that undercut funding for schools, infrastructure, and which turned California from a leading state in both to an unaffordable laggard that people are leaving.

But if a crisis is a terrible thing to waste, it can be an inspiration too. An Ohio state Senator has proposed to split the difference between retaining the currently unpopular and state constitutionally complicated system, and replace it with a Land Value Tax.
